Virgin to offer cheap mobile internet tariff
Internet access for only 30p-a-day is to be offered to all Virgin mobile phone customers, it has just been announced.
The cheap-as-chips deal will apply from December 8th and both contract and pre-pay customers can benefit from it.
According to vnunet.com, Virgin claims that the promotion is as much as three times cheaper than offers from other big-name network providers.
Virgin Mobile managing director Graeme Oxby said: "By providing unlimited access at a highly competitive rate, we are giving all our customers the opportunity to use the internet on their phone without having to worry about racking up huge bills or working out complicated price structures."
The news has understandably been greeted warmly by mobile phone websites.
Gordon Kelly of trustedreviews.co.uk is definitely in favour of the move but pointed out: "Of course 'unlimited' isn't really unlimited it's 25MB, but if you can top that on your mobile phone - BBC iPlayer / music downloads aside - you're doing rather well."
Virgin has also updated the company website for the benefit of its internet users. Photos of the revamped web portal show that Facebook, Bebo and MySpace feature prominently.
More cheeky celeb gossip is promised plus the latest breaking news, weather and sports results and "thousands of videos to choose from".
In other related news, it has been reported that Yahoo and Virgin have teamed up to make Yahoo the automatic pre-installed search service for Virgin's four million British mobile subscribers.
Yahoo hopes that the deal will help it steal some ground on rival search engine Google as the battle for the mobile internet market continues.
The head of Yahoo's mobile operations in Europe, Mitch Lazar, has been on the blower to tell Reuters: "We will continue to focus on investing in this area. It falls squarely within our strategy of indispensable starting points."
Lazar also told the news agency that Yahoo will now turn its attentions to try and expand its mobile internet providing service in France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
