iPhone 3G Users Get New iOS 4
Apple has officially launched their iOS 4 firmware upgrade, giving owners of older iPhones the same OS found on the new iPhone 4.
Users of the iPhone 3G and 3GS will now be offered the update, a few days before the release of the latest iPhone model.
The features that the upgrade will bring are dependent on the device. While iPhone 3G users won’t be getting multi-tasking like those with a 3GS, hundreds of features and changes will still find their way onto the older model.
The user interface has seen significant improvements, and Nick Farrell at The Inquirer commented: "The look and feel has changed. The icons have a 3D quality to them rather than sitting on a black screen."
Coupled with the aesthetic achievements are a whole host of extra features now available to iPhone users.
Headline features include the option to compress photos for email and a unified inbox. Users can now pool all of their email accounts onto one screen, doing away with having to switch apps and windows to check email inboxes. Following this unified mantra comes the ability to group apps into different folders which will see homescreens looking much neater.
The improved spell checker also means that more than one suggestion of spelling appears on screen, making for a smoother messaging experience.
iBooks has also been made available on the new OS, reflecting software found on the iPad. Will this mean an end to lugging around novels and textbooks? Only time will tell.
The upgrade is available now to iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPod Touch users.
