Vodafone Shifts Focus to Android Smartphones
Major mobile phone manufacturer Vodafone has decided to drop its exclusive offer of Sony Ericsson’s flagship Xperia X2 so that it can now concentrate on Google’s Nexus One and Apple’s iPhone.
The release of the X2, which was originally scheduled for release last year, was then postponed until this month.
However, Vodafone has now decided not to have an exclusive deal on the handset and has therefore removed the X2 from the “coming soon” section of its website, according to a report from The Daily Telegraph.
It is clear that Vodafone prefers to focus its commitment to those handsets which can offer the sophisticated mobile phone user a good selection from the high quantity of Apps available to them. Apple’s iPhone offers 120,000 Apps while Google’s Android operating system is growing fast, presently offering 20,000 Apps.
Vodafone’s new move reflects the current trend towards consolidation in the mobile operating system market. Android is becoming ever more popular with other mobile phone manufacturers who are using it for more devices and are likely to follow Vodafone’s example.
A statement from Vodafone said: “Vodafone UK will not be ranging the Sony Ericsson X2. The delivery date of the device, with Windows 6.5, slipped pre-Christmas due to a series of technical issues and we have taken the decision not to go ahead with the launch as it no longer fits with our planned portfolio.”
Sony Ericsson has promised a new range of “innovative, stand-out products for 2010” to help compensate for the failure of the X2 to arrive in the UK as expected.
