Vodafone Joins UK iPhone Battle
Vodafone is the latest of the major mobile phone networks in the UK to offer the iPhone to mobile phone users and will start selling it on 14 January 2010.
Like its rivals, Vodafone will offer a number of different contracts for the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS 16GB and iPhone £GS 32GB.
There will be a 1GB monthly cap on mobile Internet use to both consumer and business mobile phone users, while a “fair use” limit of 750MB is available from Orange, according to the BBC website.
Unlimited Wi-Fi use is available from both O2 and Vodafone. Orange users have an advantage in that their data limit includes Internet connections using BT Open-Zone Wi-Fi.
Already, iPhone users on the lowest tariffs from Orange and O2, and who are on a 24-month contract, receive a free handset, and now Vodafone is to offer a similar deal to their iPhone customers.
Tesco Mobile offers a lower monthly rate, but charges for the same model of iPhone handset, for a contract of only 12 months. The company says that the idea of having a shorter contract than their competitors is to give users a chance to upgrade more quickly.
CEO of Vodafone UK Guy Laurence said that his company has been working on its network for over a year to prepare for the iPhone.
As mobile phone users are now opting for Internet-enabled smartphones and mobile dongles in preference to fixed broadband deals, there is increasing concern that mobile networks are finding it hard to handle the ever growing global Internet demand.
