Vodafone Boss Slams Power of Google and Yahoo!
This week's highly anticipated Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicked off yesterday with important announcements from Vodafone, Google and Microsoft.
The MWC is an important annual platform for the launching of new products and services, and for debating the future of the mobile phone industry.
CEO of mobile phone operator Vodafone, Vittorio Colao gave out a warning that too much power is vested in the hands of giant search engines Google and Yahoo!. He called upon politicians and regulators to take this matter most seriously, according to The Guardian.
Mr Colao said that, “70 per cent, 80 per cent, maybe even more,” of power is concentrated in both major search engines and that this was potentially damaging for consumers. He added: “I believe from a public policy perspective is something that should be looked at.”
The CEO went on to say that one of the greatest challenges was the lack of application connectability between different brands of mobile phone and he challenged the handset manufacturers and software developers to “get their act together”. Mr Colao gave the analogy: “If today I buy a book in London, I can freely bring it to another country.”
Mr Colao’s remarks are significant as they were made following the launch yesterday of the Wholesale Applications Community which sets out to change the inconvenience of apps only working on certain handsets and not being interchangeable. However, Google later acknowledged the difficulty of overcoming this problem.
Another event at the congress was the launching by Microsoft of Windows Phone Series 7. CEO Steve Balmer said that his company had changed its previous approach, and was now concentrating on delivering mobile phones that focused on social networking, music and video.
