Virgin reports decrease in mobile revenue
Quarter four results released by Virgin Media have shown a decrease in mobile revenue.
Mobile revenue in the quarter was £151.6 million compared to £158.7 million in quarter three of 2007.
This comprised of £142 million service revenue and £9.6 million equipment revenue.
The company reported that service revenue decline was mainly due to a decrease in revenue from roaming charges, which is traditionally more lucrative in summer months and was "partially offset by subscriber growth".
Increased handset promotional activity during the quarter contributed to the decline in equipment revenue.
However, there was better news on other fronts - total mobile net additions in the quarter were 60,500 as against 15,900 in the previous quarter because of growth in both contract and prepay customers.
It was also heartening that contract net additions in the quarter were 47,500 compared to 29,700 in the previous quarter due to Virgin continuing to successfully cross-sell mobile contracts to Virgin Media cable customers.
Virgin Mobile does not maintain its own network but instead contracts to use the existing networks of other providers.
