Virgin Mobile Alliance with Tata To Enter GSM

Virgin Mobile Alliance with Tata To Enter GSM Virgin Mobile is planning an alliance with Tata Teleservices to facilitate the provider's entry into the GSM (global system for mobile communications) network in India. This follows a year after Virgin's entry into the CDMA (code division multiple access) mobile space.

The alliance with Tata will allow Virgin to take advantage of the company's GSM licence for 19 circles and tis GSM spectrum for 13 circles. Tata also plans to roll out GSM services in 16 circles.

In an interview with the Financial Chronicle, Jamie Heywood, the deputy CEO for Virgin Mobile India, said: “We have a commercial agreement with Tata to offer our service on the GSM network. The agreement is technology-agnostic.”

Ultimately, Virgin's advantage from this alliance is projected to be a larger subscriber base. According to Mr. Heywood, the reason for this is that around 70 per cent of India's mobile subscribers uses GSM. GSM access for Virgin would therefore mean access to more subscribers.

Mr. Heywood said that Virgin Mobile's offerings in GSM would be presented according to the franchisee model rather than the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) model. On a global scale, Virgin has used both models for its operations – both as an MVNO and a franchisee.

To date, Virgin Mobile has been a GSM operator in the UK, France, South Africa and Australia, while providing CDMA services in the United States and Canada.

Of the 12 handset models the provider currently offers as choices to its customers, six are exclusive to Virgin Mobile.

Virgin Mobile Canada - Bell

I am very sad because Bell is taking control of Virgin Mobile Canada. Terrible because I don't like Bell. What can I do now? Only two telephone monopolies companies here...
We want to see more companies in the Canadian market.

I understand why Bell did that.
