Upgraded O2 Network Doubles Capacity in London
A network analysis, upgrade and optimisation of O2’s London base stations has been completed by Nokia Siemens Networks.
Nokia Siemens Networks have examined the signalling behaviour and data of various smart devices connected to the O2 network. This provided information on the effect the devices had on different elements of the network.
Together with forecasts about the growth of traffic the information was used to set up a project for improving capacity, which upgraded those modules and elements of the network that were identified as current and future bottlenecks in O2’s network.
The upgrade incorporated modernising the network with compact, waterproof, energy efficient flexi multiradio base stations as well as enhancing signal capacity. The number of sectors in flexi multiradio each base has been increased from three to six, thus doubling the network’s capacity.
The Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards 2010 recognised this use of 3G six-sector sites, which improves capacity and so can transmit more data and voice calls on O2’s network. The demand for mobile networks, in urban areas especially, is unprecedented. The upgrade should result in an improved service for smartphone users.
In addition, according to Nokia Siemens Networks, the upgrade will help to conserve the battery life of smartphones and decrease the signalling load on the network.
Nokia Siemens Networks customer team head Pete Mitchell said “Thanks to our partnership over the last decade with O2, we worked closely to keep pace with booming smartphone demand and to ensure that O2 UK can cost-efficiently enhance their subscriber experience.”
