UK Mobile Phone Carriers Seek Deals for iPad
Several mobile phone operators, and retailer The Carphone Warehouse, are competing to sell the iPad, Apple’s new tablet computer in the UK and Europe.
This new interest has been sparked by the announcement last week by Steve Jobs that a version of the iPad that can access 3G mobile phone networks as well as WiFi, is to start shipping in the US in April. This will be under a deal with AT&T, supplier of the iPhone in North America.
In Europe, similar deals are being sought by UK mobile phone carriers, Orange, Vodafone, T-Mobile and O2 prior to the launch of the iPad later this year, said The Guardian.
Already, Orange has held talks with Apple, as it did when attempting to secure a deal for the iPhone only to be pre-empted by O2 at the last minute.
After O2 famously disappointed Apple in the UK when iPhone sales were much lower than expected, the company is unlikely to win another shot at an Apple exclusivity deal. Sources reveal that O2 and Vodafone have not yet begun talks with Apple to secure a deal on the iPad.
Orange is looking towards offering British users a good subsidy for the device, to make it more affordable. In the US, however, Apple has not so far sought subsidies from its wireless partner, AT&T, and is steering customers towards short as opposed to long term contracts.
Andrew Harrison CEO of Carphone Warehouse, Europe’s largest independent mobile phone retailer, hopes to repeat his company’s success with the iPhone. He said that the device fits in well within the world of connectivity, especially mobile connectivity.
T-Mobile is likely to seek an iPad deal for Germany as well as the UK and Orange is doing the same for France, while Vodafone is focusing on Italy.
