UK Mobile Internet Users Prefer Facebook to Twitter

UK Mobile Internet Users Prefer Facebook to Twitter The way things are moving ahead in mobile Internet, it is the social media sites that are getting a lot of the attention from mobile phone users, according to recent figures from Google Zeitgeist.

However, interestingly, social media preferences differ between the US and the UK as keeping up with friends’ microblogs on Twitter seems to appeal more to US than to UK mobile phone users. The Twitter phenomenon, with its short but sweet tweets just doesn’t seem to have made as much impact in the UK as it has in the US. Social media users in the UK seem to be firmly attached to Facebook as they constantly update their own status, view those of their friends and send messages to friends on their mobile phones.

Bebo and MySpace are the less popular social media sites, showing significant falls in popularity, with Bebo in eighth place of the fastest falling global search terms and in just sixth place on the list of the fastest rising Google Mobile searches. MySpace is not mentioned at all on the Zeitgeist, following its battle last year with Facebook.

Spokesman for Google UK Anthony House said: “Britons had mixed feelings as they headed online this year to search for their favourite online tools, to learn about celebrities new and old, and to find a good bargain. Facebook, eBay and Spotify all featured in the year’s fastest rising searches.”

Mr House added: “People searched about new sensations like Lady Gaga and Susan Boyle, but they also turned to the web to learn about the deaths of Stephen Gately, Jade Goody and Michael Jackson.”
