Thousands Recycle iPhones for New Model

Thousands Recycle iPhones for New Model Thousands of people desperate to ease the cost of purchasing the new iPhone 4 have been busy recycling older versions of the handset in a bid to raise funds for the new model.

Mobile phone website Sellmymobile.com, which compares UK prices, completed research that revealed the iPhone 3G was the phone that was recycled by the most people in June. The research also found that the average payout to people recycling the second generation iPhone 3G is £170 in cash.

The website also said that the majority of people who were recycling the device were putting the cash directly towards the newer version of Apple's iPhone. With over 1.7 million iPhone 4 handsets being sold within three days of its release, the new model became Apple's fastest-selling product ever.

Results showed that both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the iPhone 3G, as well as Apple's third generation device, the 16GB iPhone 3GS, were at the top of the phone recycling chart last month.

Other popular devices in the list of phones recycled included the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music and BlackBerry's 8900 Curve. It is thought that expensive phones are being sent in as users look to upgrade to the latest must-have models.

Research by Sellmymobile.com revealed that the amount of cash back that users received varied widely depending on the site that was used, but its research also showed that the average amount of cash paid out in June on handsets was an impressive £77.75. The topic of recycling electricals, and particularly mobile phones, is prominent right now, as the UK government aims to keep these items out of landfill sites.
