Thieves Defied by BlackBerry Protect

Thieves Defied by BlackBerry Protect BlackBerry users may soon benefit from a new app for tracking and security.

A lost mobile can undoubtedly create a huge amount of stress. Thankfully, the hassle and the worry could be lessened by the upcoming feature. Developed by Research In Motion (RIM), the company behind the BlackBerry brand, the app will be known as BlackBerry Protect.

The main focus of the product is its GPS functionality. If the consumer’s BlackBerry is mislaid, the handset’s general location will be transmitted to a particular map. From this, users can follow their device to its position.

Although the GPS does not pinpoint the exact location of the device, it does work to a good degree of accuracy. In addition, for those searching for their BlackBerry in their home, a loud ringtone can be activated to alert the searcher.

Practicality has been carefully considered. In most scenarios, users do not realise their phone is missing until they are a fair distance away. Possibly, the device may be too far away to fetch, making it necessary to enable BlackBerry Protect’s second major feature – the lock option. With the touch of a button, the phone will be remotely locked, preventing thieves from stealing valuable information.

As an absolute last resort, if the phone is irretrievable, a third option allows the owner to destroy all data on the phone. However, if the phone is somehow reunited with its owner, the data can be restored later. Auto-backup ensures files are stored safely with the user at home, for use with any BlackBerry model.

Still in beta-testing stage, RIM has promised that BlackBerry Protect will be commercially available soon.
