Tesco Expands Phone Offering With New Deal
Tesco is set to expand its current offering of mobile phone handsets and tariffs, thanks to a new 5-year deal with Cable & Wireless. The supermarket giant will now sell landline phones and broadband packages to customers.
Tesco announced the new deal with Cable & Wireless and plans to sell phone and internet deals online and in-store, becoming a bigger player in the telecoms market.
In 2003, Tesco announced a joint venture with mobile phone network O2. Since then, the supermarket has sold phones and broadband packages through its stores. Tesco also has 100 phone shops within certain stores. The Guardian has reported that weekly sales of mobile phone contracts have grown four-fold throughout this year.
With the new Cable & Wireless deal, Tesco intends to open a further 100 phone shops by the end of next year, with long-term plans of 500 phone shops.
Tesco’s telecoms chief executive, Lance Batchelor explained the new deal would enable Tesco to provide customers with landline phones and internet deals. This means Tesco can now compete with companies like BSkyB and Virgin Media.
Mr Batchelor said: “Our goal: to become a leading provider of telecoms services and products to Tesco customers, with the medium-term potential to generate around £2bn revenue and around £200m profit.”
Tesco has also recently announced plans for offering banking services. Chief executive of Tesco’s retailing division, Andrew Higginson said: “We have demonstrated we can be successful in specific product categories with modest market shares ... However, significant parts of these markets remain untapped.”
