Stuff readers praise iPhone 3G

Stuff readers praise iPhone 3G The impact of Apple's iPhone 3G on the UK market has been summed up by the decision of Stuff magazine's readership to name the mobile phone gadget of the year.

The new version of the phone follows in the footsteps of its predecessor by winning a Stuff Gadget Award - the first incarnation of the iPhone was crowned coolest gadget in last year's ceremony.

Released amid much hype in the UK over the summer, the iPhone 3G readily captured the public's imagination and sold around 50,000 units in the first two weeks after its launch - and still has sufficient appeal to maintain weekly sales figures of over 25,000 to date.

Indeed, an industry insider has told iPhoneWorld that the iPhone 3G accounts for four to six per cent of all of the mobile handsets sold in the UK at present.

Given the iPhone 3G's high profile it is little wonder that Stuff readers deemed it the gadget of the year, even allowing for the competition provided by the likes of Sony's PlayStation 3, Microsoft's Xbox 360, Nintendo's Wii Fit and the B&W Zeppelin iPod speakers.

However, the magazine's editors chose the budget laptop Asus Eee PC, available for less than £300, as their favourite gadget having reached their conclusion after assessing performance, design, value and cool factor.

However, Stuff's editor Fraser Macdonald believes it is just as important to get the perspective of the general public as it is to receive the verdict of those supposedly more in the know.

"Having our readers vote for a number of the awards has been fascinating," he said in a Reuters interview.

"They are the ones out there on the street buying gadgets and so they are a great barometer."

Just for the record, Stuff describes the new iPhone 3G as being "a faster, cleverer version of an already remarkable phone".

Meanwhile, the Stuff Gadget Awards also honoured another mobile phone manufacturer - Nokia was chosen as the best international brand.

Other winners include Grand Theft Auto IV as the year's best game, and the Ego Electric Street Scoota™ in the best green gadget category.
