Student suffers from 'text messager's thumb'

Student suffers from text messagers thumb A medical student in New Zealand has been diagnosed with ‘text-messager’s thumb’ as a result of her excessive use of SMS.

Fleur de Vere Beavis is said to be suffering from the condition of Texting Tenosynovitis, which has seen her tendons swell up and her thumb become inflamed.

Sending up to 100 messages every day has caused her physical pain, says the New Zealand Herald, with the problem one of only a few cases in the world.

Reported in the New Zealand Medical Journal, Ms Beavis follows the case of a Singapore school child and an Australian teenager who found themselves in a similar position.

Doctors have advised the 20-year-old to text with both hands to avoid putting pressure on her thumb, which has apparently eased the pain.

Texting has become a global phenomenon since it first appeared as part of an internal service used by phone engineers, with a Vodafone worker sending a message of Merry Christmas back in 1992.

Sympathizing

Currently I suffer from text thumb. Many doctors state that they have not seen this ailment but I think there are many people like me who have it and don't see a doctor about it. The treatment is obvious.
