Stolen mobiles seized in London police raids
London police have recovered a mountain of mobile phones believed to have been stolen by street gangs and pickpockets.
Code-named Operation Prestige, the initiative, involving undercover cops from the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit, recovered 324 phones, with 56 people being arrested.
Swoops on properties in theft hot-spots took place last month, with the operation being particularly busy in Lambeth, Lewisham, Croydon, Brent, Tower Hamlets and Camden.
Crime analysts will be quick to point out that unearthing a haul of 324 handsets is just a small drop in the ocean when the mobile phone unit was founded in 2003, an estimated 200 mobiles were being stolen each day.
But it is hoped that Prestige will have uncovered a few mobile phone theft ringleaders, whose activities are often linked to gun and drug-related crime.
The crime unit will be using a service called Immobilise, which lets people register details of their stolen phone details online, to try and match the gadgets with their rightful owners.
