Starbucks Mobile Payments in UK from January

Starbucks Mobile Payments in UK from January Starbucks has chosen to roll out its new mobile application after a successful run in the US and more than 20 million transactions.

The new service is aimed at encouraging more users to sign up to the Starbucks Card program, which incentivises customers to purchase with perks like free syrup or cheaper filter coffee.

Earlier this year Starbucks was reported to be considering NFC payments following the launch of a collaboration between Barclaycard and Orange called 'Quicktap'. This is the UK's first commercial NFC service and depends on compatible hardware like the Samsung Tocco Lite handset, whereas the new Starbucks solution involves displaying a scannable barcode on a screen and deducting cash accordingly.

NFC payments are a definite technological advancement and have been gaining momentum in other territories lately. However, the UK isn't quite dressed for the party and other means have proven more viable for the coffee giant.

Brian Waring, Marketing Director for UK operations, explained why Starbucks had chosen to create its own system. "We wanted to find a way for them to pay in the quickest way possible. Because our customers want it, we have created our own custom-built mobile payment technology rather than waiting for the near field communication technology which is currently not widely available," he explained. "We're always thinking of new ways to add value to our customers and give them more reasons to choose Starbucks," he added.

The payment app will be released on iPhone and other iOS devices (that's iPads and iPod touches) on 5th January 2012 and the service will be immediately available to all stores in the UK.
