Spice launches cheapest phone in the world

India-based telecoms company Spice is launching a £10 mobile phone.

The company doesn't expect high brow mobile fans to ditch their iPhones and Walkphones in favour of the new gadget - as it is strictly no-frills.

"It is just a phone," Spice's chairman Bhupendra Kumar Modi, said enigmatically.

He's not wrong - the cheap-as-dirt mobile doesn't even have a screen and it's not clear whether it's sold with a battery, charger, packaging or instruction manual.

But the company thinks it is on to a winner and is hoping to develop a £5 model for punters scared off by the £10 price tag.

Over half the world's population doesn't have a mobile phone and fast-emerging nations like India are being targeted by mobile companies with an eye for expansion.

India is the mecca for companies looking to promote bargain products. In January car manufacturer Tata launched the world's cheapest car - yours (if you live in India) for just £1,250.
