South Lanarkshire Council Accepts Vodafone Contract

South Lanarkshire Council Accepts Vodafone Contract South Lanarkshire Council has recently entered into a Vodafone UK contract amounting to almost £3 million, according to eastkilbridenews.co.uk. The deal follows the expiry of the Council's previous contract with the provider at the end of 2008.

After considering various offers by other providers such as T-Mobile, British Telecom Mobile, O2 and Orange, the Council estimated the Vodafone offer as the most beneficial.

Although many of the other providers offered cheaper deals, a value service review found that Vodafone’s offer was generally the best in terms of running costs, technical merit, after sales service and environmental characteristics. In terms of value for money, the decision was therefore made in favour of this provider.

The new contract will run for four years, and includes handsets and calls. Individually, the cost amounts to an average of £8 per telephone per month, according to a spokeswoman for South Lanarkshire Council.

In total, the Council uses about 4200 mobile phones, 280 BlackBerry handsets, and 600 mobile data modems. The collective cost of these per month, as calculated in February, was around £41,000.

This technology is regarded as vital in performing Council duties. The Council believes that Vodafone UK provides the best tools to handle these duties effectively.

The Lanarkshire spokeswoman stated: “Mobile telephones are allocated on a business need basis to those employees who are often away from the office. Mobile telephones are allocated, for example, to Home Care staff and lone workers and contribute to their safety.”

The allocation and usage of mobile technology are controlled by a Mobile Telephones Acceptable Use Policy, which users sign when receiving their devices.

What a f**kin' liberty

As a tax paying member of the South Lanarkshire community, I am frankly outraged and astonished that the council can afford to throw £3 million at Vodafone to get themselves new mobile phone contracts.

I am so glad that when our area is in dire need of improving local facilities in health and education, our money is actually going to be spent handing out the latest mobile phone models to workers for the council.

I hope they choke on their new handsets, maybe then they will realise how tight money is at our hospitals as they wait in A&E for hours on end in an under-staffed, sub-standard facility.

I thought this was an old April Fools!

Well, seeing as I find it unlikely they will charge staff the measly £8 per unit (which they should as it is bought with public funding), thank God for the £150 they charged me for putting up a bit of plywood when my window was smashed.

I would hate to think of all these people without a contract phone, especially when they ruined my sitting room carpet for free!

What a joke!

Considering the cuts the council have to make on things like pensioners' Christmas bonus, gardening service to over 70s, closing public toilets, etc, it is a relief to see that essentials like mobile phones and BlackBerries will not be affected as I don't know how the council managed to operate before these were invented. Shocking waste of money, which would be put to better use elsewhere!
