Sony Music Service to Challenge Apple iTunes
Major consumer electronics company Sony has announced its intention to launch a new music service, similar to Apple's iTunes, for handheld mobile phone devices.
The new service, called Sony Online Service will enable users to download a range of downloadable multimedia applications including music, films, games and books, and will certainly break into Apple’s territory.
Neither the launch date nor any other further details have as yet been divulged by Sony’s top executives.
Sony will focus on promoting its own digital content which it can link with the new service for mobile phones.
Kazuo Hirai, executive VP of Sony’s network product and services said in an interview with Business Week that the company would have an expansive range of applications for Sony Online Services.
Sony will make it possible for mobile phone users not only to be able to download digital applications but also to enjoy a range of social networking facilities such as uploading videos and images as well as connecting with each other.
Mr Hirai said: “It's not just access content, stream it, and enjoy. What are your friends watching right now? There's a screen that says all the programming that's available. It highlights all the things that your friends are watching, for example. It's a community experience.”
However, Sony is unlikely to make a major impact on Apple’s continuing popularity and success. Apple has made sure that its products are at the cutting edge of technology and ahead of the innovation curb for Sony’s new service to present any real threat.
