Sony Ericsson to Launch Android Gaming Phone
Sony Ericsson is looking to revolutionise the Android gaming platform with the launch of a new handset.
Running Android 3.0, the device will be the 'star' of the new firmware's launch, according to Mobile Choice. With an expected unveiling as early as October, it won't be long before we get the chance to see the device in all its glory. However, it's only expected to hit shelves in 2011.
With looks similar to that of the recent PSP Go handheld device, the new handset gets the best of both worlds. The new and improved Android experience is coupled with a slide-out panel featuring all the device's gaming controls. Shoulder keys, standard PlayStation controls and a bespoke 'long touch pad' are included.
The handset is expected to be a part of the Xperia smartphone family, with a display around 4 inches. A 5MP camera and 1GHZ Snapdragon processor are also expected to be built into Sony's latest Android handset.
A new area of the Android Market is being created just for the handset's games. Headline games are expected to be Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Little Big Planet. Certain games are expected to be opened up to other Android handsets, provided they meet the hardware requirements. Also heading to the hybrid device are augmented reality games that incorporate the phone's camera.
Graphics are somewhere in the realm of the PSX and the current PSP - well above most gaming visuals on mobiles today. Engadget.com described the new Sony Ericsson handset as "a major win for both companies and the consumer".
