Sony Ericsson mobiles to get new search service

Sony Ericsson mobiles to get new search service A new application which will let users find out what's happening and how to find it, wherever they are, is to be pre-loaded on to all of Sony Ericsson's new 8.1-megapixel Cyber-shot C905 phones.

A company called Mobile Commerce has come up with the innovative 'NearMe' application which will also be available to download onto the GPS-enabled C702 Cyber-shot and W760 Walkman handsets.

The local search service will provide users with detailed information on local businesses, facilities, and events, all based on their current location using the GPS capabilities of the user's handset.

Full content will include details about listings for cinemas, clubs and gigs with over 11,000 recommended venues for food and drink.

The technology is sure to appeal to the business community too, since there are over 1.9 million business search listings.

Information is updated on an ongoing basis so that the details that are retrieved are always up-to-the-minute. Full addresses and contact numbers come attached to each recommendation and listing so that you can check out whether that restaurant is full or what time a support band is due to come on stage.

More detailed information such as film reviews, costs and show times is also available and once you've decided where your big night's action is going to take place, there is even a map to show you exactly how to get there.

David Hilton, head of marketing, Sony Ericsson UK & Ireland, said: "We are delighted with the NearMe application and have already defined a roadmap of enhancements to bring even more functionality and choice to our customers."

"We are delighted to be working with Sony Ericsson, which is known as an innovative global brand," added Steve Page, CEO of Mobile Commerce.

"To be recognised by them as a leader in our field is an even greater incentive to develop and deliver an exciting application which shows the full capability of their latest handsets."
