Sony Ericsson Joins UEFA Champions League

Sony Ericsson Joins UEFA Champions League Hot on the heels of the UEFA Champions League group stage draw, Sony Ericsson has been announced as the official mobile sponsor.

The company, known for its involvement with football, has taken advantage of the "high excitement levels", expanding its partnership with UEFA for the next two years. Setting up a global marketing strategy that will run through to 2012, Sony Ericsson intends to increase exclusive content for its customers.

GPS capabilities will be utilised for "the best possible on-device experience", bringing a host of information about ongoing football games to consumers' handsets. Smartphones such as the Xperia range will benefit heavily from this arrangement, being fitted with high-spec GPS technology.

The "fan-focused approach" also offers up a brand-new app for Sony Ericsson users, a collaborative effort from the mobile developer and UEFA. The upcoming Champions League tournament will feature heavily in the currently mysterious mobile application.

Lennard Hoornik, corporate vice-president and head of global marketing for Sony Ericsson, said: "We are delighted to be announcing today the activation of a new global marketing programme around the UEFA Champions League. Using the existing GPS capabilities of our Xperia smartphones to enhance the fan experience is an exciting part of this programme. This new initiative will build on our other ongoing worldwide sponsorship campaigns."

The brand-boosting arrangement follows a surge of good publicity for the mobile developer. Sony Ericsson has grabbed five places on O2's top 10 list of eco-friendly phones, also clinching the top spot with the Elm handset.

The new "official mobile handset of the UEFA Champions League" will be unveiling its new UEFA app in the near future.
