Smartphones Key To Mobile Recovery

Smartphones Key To Mobile Recovery Although there has been a 0.9 per cent drop in the sales of handsets, one sector of the market is seeing a boom.

Smartphone sales rose in the fourth quarter of 2009 by 8.3 per cent according to a report from analysts, Gartner. Globally, the sale of mobile phones was down 0.9 per cent in 2009 compared with the previous year.

In total, 53.8 million smartphones were sold in Q4. This represented a rise of 41.1 per cent over the comparable period in 2008. On a yearly basis, smartphone sales were up on 2008 by 23.8 per cent, reaching 172.4 million units.

In 2009, the combined marketshare of all of the top five mobile phone manufacturers fell by more than 4 per cent. Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola all saw a drop in sales with Nokia’s share falling to 36.4 per cent from 38.6 per cent and Motorola’s from 8.7 per cent to 4.8 per cent. Sony Ericsson’s market share saw a decline to 4.5 per cent from 7.6 per cent year on year.

“The mobile devices market finished on a very positive note, driven by growth in smartphones and low-end devices,” said Carolina Milanesi, Gartner's research director. She warned that the first half of this year would see Nokia facing a tough time, prior to the launch of the Symbian and Meego platforms.

“Symbian had become uncompetitive in recent years, but its market share, particularly on Nokia devices, is still strong. If Symbian can use this momentum, it could return to positive growth,” commented Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner.
