Smaller Businesses to have Free BlackBerry Software

Smaller Businesses to have Free BlackBerry Software Research in Motion (RIM) has announced that it is to introduce new simplified software for the BlackBerry.

The new software, which is free, is designed as an incentive to small and medium businesses to standardise on BlackBerries. It will fit nicely between the company’s industrial-strength BlackBerry Enterprise Server and personal plans provided by mobile networks, reports the register.co.uk.

The new software, called Express was announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this week and will be available online in March.

Express is a simplified version of the more capable Enterprise software, with less support for Enterprise level add-ons, fewer of the IT management tools and a lack of “high availability” features.

With the installation of Express, small and medium businesses will be able to provide their employees with the ability to sync their email, contacts, calendar, tasks and notes on their BlackBerries.

Staff will also be able manage email folders, search email, book meetings, forward calendar attachments and access network-based files. They will also be able to use DataViz to edit Microsoft Office packages, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

However, in order to support the BlackBerry Mobile Voice System, Microsoft Office Communications Server, IBM Lotus Sametime (instant messaging), Connections (social software for business), Quickr (document sharing) and Chalk Pushcast (podcasting), employees would need the full Enterprise Server .

The Express server provides just 35 “IT controls and policies” in contrast to the 450 provided by the full version. However, in common with the full version it does offer the facility to remotely wipe a BlackBerry.
