Skype Pulls out from Windows and Java Phones

Skype Pulls out from Windows and Java Phones Skype has decided to withdraw its Skype for Windows Mobile Phones service and Skype Lite for Java handsets, which includes mobiles which use the Android platform. The decision was made following the release of its latest upgrade to the VoIP client for Windows PCs.

The company backed up its decision by saying that neither of these apps offered a great Skype experience. Consequently it has taken download pages for the apps off its website. However, existing users who have already downloaded the apps will continue to be able to use them.

Skype also acknowledged that Skype Lite has only a limited list of countries. Furthermore, there was inconsistency on devices that had Windows Mobile, so that the app performed differently from one device to the next.

Skype has built a reputation on consistency and solid service, and without being able to guarantee these functions to customers, the company made the right decision to pull the mobile apps.

Skype is now optimistic that its Nokia users will pick up Skype for Symbian as its operating system overlaps with some of the Java mobile phones.

Early last month, at the Mobile World Congress, Skype announced a deal with Verizon to place a mobile Skype App on various smartphones, including some BlackBerry mobile phones which have awaited support for some time.

Verizon may well offer Skype Mobile on Windows smartphones in the US, as according to news.cnet.com, a Windows Phone 7 app may become available in the US by December 2010.

Up until now, Skype has been developing its Windows phone apps. Last June the company released Skype 3.0 for Windows phones. It has also continued to work on a new app which is compatible with Nokia.
