Second iPhone Explodes in Brazil

Second iPhone Explodes in Brazil Just days after reports of an iPhone 4 overheating and emitting smoke on an Australian airliner, an iPhone owner in Brazil has reported a similar incident.

According to Mashable, Mr Ayla Mota woke up to the sight of his iPhone 4 handset, lying just 15 inches away from his face, sparking and producing black smoke. Mr Mota said that the device also produced an “unbearable” smell, and he quickly unplugged the phone, opened windows in the room to clear the fumes and turned a fan on to speed up the process.

Aviation authorities in Australia have recently launched an investigation into an incident involving an overheating iPhone (see main image) on a Regional Express Airlines plane. The phone was said to have glowed red and emitted thick smoke and flames as the plane landed in Sydney.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau obtained the device and will be investigating the cause of the fire. The organisation said it would be seeking assistance from Apple.

“We do have the phone. It is in our custody and we will be undertaking a technical examination of it,” said the airline in a statement. “We will be interviewing directly involved parties and also in our technical examination of the phone we are going to be consulting with the manufacturer as well.”

Apple said it looked forward to working with the airline to determine the cause of the incident. The company has previously had problems with overheating in its original range of iPod nanos, with a batch sold between 2005 and 2006 recalled due to safety concerns.
