Samsung provides challenge to iPhone 2.0

Samsung provides challenge to iPhone 2.0 In a week of big launches, Samsung has announced its own latest smartphone, the Omnia.

The Samsung Omnia is the latest addition to the marketplace of super phones capable of letting you browse the internet, listen to your music, view photos, watch movies and - of course - make calls.

It also appears to have a comprehensive specification against this year's iPhone 3G.

First, the Omnia has a 3.2-inch WVGA screen, and Windows Mobile 6.1 underneath. Samsung have taken the opportunity to tweak Windows Mobile though, so users will be faced with software of a different, unique feel, as opposed to the basic Windows set-up.

For photo geeks, the Omnia is quite remarkable, packing a five-megapixel camera, with autofocus and face recognition to aid you on those quick shots.

However, the iPhone 3G has a big advantage in its price - $199 for an 8GB version and only $299 for the 16GB model.

Although it will be difficult to see how such a phone from Samsung will be able to beat that price, it will certainly be interesting to find out how they compare on sales.

Subsidies for all.

O2 Germany have already said they are selling the phone for only 179 euros on contract.

Since the iPhone''s price is subsidy based, and not due to any manufacturing breakthrough, there is no reason why other devices can not also get the same attractive terms.
