Samsung Set for Major Boost in Smartphone Sales
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the world’s second largest mobile phone manufacturer, announced on Thursday 4 February that it has plans to triple its sales of smartphones this year.
Together with its rival LG Electronics Inc, Samsung’s challenge in 2010 is to increase its smartphone offerings. Both companies jointly account for over 30 per cent of the total market for mobile phones but have very little hold on the smartphone market, according to The Washington Post.
In an interview with reporters, Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung’s mobile phone division said: “There'll be a big change in our smartphone strategy this year. We plan to strengthen our smartphone business this year by not just improving hardware offerings but also beefing up content, applications and services.”
Although Samsung holds about 20 per cent of the global mobile phone market it has only 3 per cent of the smartphone sector. The company said that it would now concentrate on promoting Bada, its own open smartphone platform, which although was launched in the latter part of last year has been little noticed by mobile phone developers and sellers.
Since Apple and Google have entered the mobile phone market the main emphasis seems to have been on software rather than handsets. With the market for smartphones dominating the mobile phone industry, more traditional mobile phone makers have taken rather a back seat to iPhone manufacturer Apple and Research in Motion (RIM) who make the BlackBerry.
The SmartPhone market is expected to treble to 525 million mobile handsets by 2012, from 179 million in 2009.
