Samsung Galaxy Nexus Launch Reveals Android Face Recognition

Samsung Galaxy Nexus Launch Reveals Android Face Recognition The launch of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone featuring the latest Android 4.0 ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ software, with features such as facial recognition to unlock the handset.

The launch event in Hong Kong revealed details of the latest collaboration between Google and Samsung, with Google’s head of mobile Andy Rubin highlighting the upcoming birthday of the first ‘Google phone’ – the G1. He said that Android devices are now being activated at the rate of 550,000 per day, with the Galaxy Nexus becoming the ninth incarnation of the Google phone.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus features a gently curved 4.65-inch Super AMOLED screen with 1280x720 pixels and a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. NFC near-field technology allows users to share content simply by placing two phones together, and speech recognition software will make texting and messaging easier for many.

The phone’s 5MP camera sets it slightly behind the 8MP unit in the iPhone 4S, and users looking for decent storage size might be disappointed to learn that the 16GB model will be the largest storage option for the Galaxy Nexus in the UK - and there’s no microSD option either. The phone is expected to be carried by retailers Phones4U and network 3, with the former offering the handset for free on a £46 monthly contract.

Motorola also released some new gear featuring Google’s Android OS, including the Droid RAZR phone – an updated version of the current Droid handset. The Droid RAZR has been slimmed down significantly, leaving it just 7.1mm thick, and features a Kevlar back case – the same material used for bulletproof vests and Formula One car fuel tanks. The Droid RAZR currently runs Android 2.3, and it has not yet been snapped up by any UK carriers.

This phone looks like a direct competitor to the new Motorola RAZR. Android's operating system gets more advance with each new version/update which is why Android users stay so loyal. Face recognition is probably one of the more realistic technological advancements for security on your phone. Let's face it, screen patterns are ineffective, especially if you got prankster co-workers, friends and family who are constantly around you and have memorized your security patterns.
