Rumours Abound About Google’s NexusOne

Internet giant Google is to add a mobile phone to its list of offerings in 2010, without a connection to a wireless carrier.

The Sun-Times of Chicago reported that the phone will be available for purchase online – through Google, of course – and buyers will be able to choose their own carrier, independent of any push from the sales force. One optional carrier could be Google itself, as the web-search company is currently developing its own voice services.

Sometimes known as the Googlephone, the phone will be called the NexusOne. Its market price is not yet known. In fact, details about the phone are patchy. Last week Google gave its 20,000 employees phones that use the company’s Android software for testing.

According to the Technologizer, the phone will apparently have a trackball, but will not have a keyboard – so basically it’s a phone with just a screen. It is a GSM phone, and will run Android 2.1. It will have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, a 7.2 mbps download and 2 mbps upload speed.

One blogger on TechCrunch, speculated that the phone will be “really, really fast”. Running on a Snapdragon chip, the phone will have a super-high resolution OLED touchscreen, and be slimmer than an iPhone. Further speculation suggests the phone will have a second microphone on the back of the phone which will help to eliminate background noise.

With no keys, the touchscreen will act as the keyboard, but there will also apparently be a voice-to-text feature which will enable dictation direct to the phone.
