Report questions progress of mobile games industry
A new survey has revealed that the number of people downloading games to play on their mobile has stayed the same - though more people are playing mobile games.
According to research analysts M:Metrics, the seemingly conflicting facts can be explained by the fact that mobile gamers are sticking to games 'native' to their handsets.
Its research found that 98.4 million people in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States played a mobile game in December.
But almost three-quarters spurned downloading to play games that were already inbuilt on their device.
In contrast, only 8.8 per cent of mobile game fans played a game they had downloaded to store on their phone - roughly the same as the figure in December 2006.
Spain has the highest penetration of those playing a downloaded game last December - 12.7 per cent. The French are the most resistant to downloading mobile games - just 3.5 per cent playing one.
While music has become popular amongst mobile-loving downloaders, the gaming market seems to be a tougher nut to crack for the handset industry.
