Reluctance to Switch Providers Could be Expensive

Reluctance to Switch Providers Could be Expensive In a recent article posted on the Debt Helpline Website, author Clement Moine examines the reluctance of UK mobile users to transfer their existing phone numbers to other providers.

On the one hand, many users are simply not aware of the possibility to transfer an existing number to another provider. Some users feel that the inconvenience and time involved in the process are simply not worth it, even though it could mean significant savings.

The author appears to believe that such an attitude is a mistake, particularly in light of the fact that, collectively, these reluctant users are “missing out on £1.5 billion worth of savings.”

The article cites research from uSwitch which indicates that a large number of UK mobile users – amounting to about 18 million – have never switched to an alternative mobile provider for the purpose of better tariffs. The question is whether this is a case of reluctance or ignorance.

The author does not indicate which proportion of the 18 million users are simply not aware of the possibility to keep an existing phone number while switching to a more cost-effective provider. The indication is however that those who are unaware of the possibility is in the significant minority.

Only around two million out of 15 million survey participants believed that they would be unable to retain their old number when switching to a new provider. The rest indicated that they would make the switch if retaining an existing number were to be more convenient and less time-intensive.

Along with providers such as T-Mobile, the regulator Ofcom is working on the issue, and soon consumers may begin to see attempts at making the switch much simper and faster.
