Orange and T-Mobile pick up new licences
Mobile phone companies Orange and T-Mobile were among ten organisations to pick up new licences in the fourth radio spectrum auction.
Ofcom, the communications regulator, said the licences would allow their owners to operate networks between 10GHz and 40GHz, supporting high capacity wireless services.
Also among the recipients were BT, UK Broadband and Red-M.
"The spectrum awarded is suitable for high-capacity broadband, for example, for organisations seeking to share wireless internet connections across buildings in close proximity and providing infrastructure for wireless networks," Ofcom said in a statement.
"The spectrum has been released on a technology and service neutral basis, allowing these users the flexibility to decide what technology to use, what services to offer and to change their use of the spectrum over time."
The licences, which are released amid growing demand for high-speed wireless connectivity, are all tradable.
