Orange and Doro Provide 410gsm Phone for the Elderly

Orange and Doro Provide 410gsm Phone for the Elderly Orange's partnership with Swedish mobile developer Doro has provided a new solution for elderly people requiring a simple mobile phone.

For those who find mobile phones overly complicated, the Doro PhoneEasy 410gsm has become readily available for Orange UK pay-as-you-go customers. Created specifically for the elderly, the phone's features have been designed to ensure maximum ease of use.

As reported on MobileToday, a large proportion of the elderly population own a mobile phone. Furthermore, roughly half of these people feel uncomfortable with the technology-dependence of today, and view mobiles solely as a method of communication.

The large backlit keypad is perfect for those with limited movement in their hands, allowing room for both dialling and texting. By enhancing the size of the characters on the screen, the problem of vision impairment has been catered for. For the hard of hearing, sound quality has been significantly increased, and the standard vibrate function is present.

If the phone itself still presents difficulties, Bluetooth is an integrated option which enables the use of a hands-free device.

A feature less commonly seen in the mobile market is the panic button feature. In case of emergency, users can push a button on the underside of the device and up to five pre-assigned numbers will be rung. For the elderly or disabled, this could potentially save lives.

Doro UK's managing director Chris Millington stated: "Handsets designed to accommodate common impairments can often help to improve the quality of everyday living. We're taking mobile devices back to basics and are pleased to be doing this with Orange UK."

Excellent device

I managed to obtain one of these from Sweden for my deaf 93-year-old father. At last he is able to use and hear on a mobile, keeping in touch when out and about.

Not just for the elderly

These phones will also be ideal for those with special needs such as my Down's Syndrome daughter whose eyesight is not too good and who only needs a basic phone with which to call me or close members of her family.
