Orange Strike Widget Deal with Netvibes
According to a Total Telecom article, Orange has recently made a deal with Netvibes to increase its widgets by 200,000 mini applications. The Orange Widgets service is already present on 80 per cent of its handsets, and the new deal is envisioned to increase the operator's global presence.
Orange will increase its market presence by also offering the widgets on its Djingo platform, which can be accessed by all compatible handsets, even if users are not Orange customers. David Nahmani, the Orange director of business development and partnerships, believes that the timing for this move is perfect.
Mr. Nahmani said: “The smartphone experience is exploding in several markets across Europe…We want to democratise the experience... it is important to remember that the majority of users are still using feature phones.”
Widgets are generally simpler than apps, and are therefore aimed at casual mobile user market. With this in mind, Orange launched its widgets service in July 2009, beginning with a focus on its European market.
The operator's partnership with Netvibes will widen its focus to include the global community. According to Mr Nahmani, Netvibes has a developer community that can translate widgets into 90 languages.
This will not only increase the physical extent of the Orange market presence, but also its local focus in specific countries. Local markets such as the Polish community in the UK will for example benefit from this feature.
It is a mutually beneficial partnership, the advantage for Netvibes being that it can address a very large community of mobile phone users while saving the effort of developing its product for multiple handset models.
