Orange Shows Strength in Last Quarter of 2009

Orange Shows Strength in Last Quarter of 2009 Orange has reported an increase in customer numbers for quarter four of last year.

For the period ending 31 December, the company increased its customer base by 404,000. A number of reasons are cited for this improvement, not least the introduction of 24-month contracts and the availability of what the company describes as “high end multimedia devices”, of which the iPhone is predominant.

It all represents the best prepay performance for the company in the last two years.

266,000 new contract customers were added to the mix. 80 per cent of these customers took advantage of the extended two year contracts. By comparison, only 11 per cent of customers took out 24-month contracts in the previous Q4 of 2008.

Year on year, the operator’s total contract customer base increased by 12 per cent. This breaks down as 6.9 million new customers for a total customer base of 17.4 million.

The Christmas period was particularly busy, partly due to Orange UK investing in more retail outlets, bringing the total number of shops to 417, an increase of 17 per cent compared with the previous year. New retail opportunities included outlets in Asda and HMV, and three new concept shops.

Fourth quarter revenues fell marginally by 1.2 per cent. This is compared to the third quarter figures which showed a seven per cent decline.

However the revenue for the UK for the whole year stayed static at £4.49bn. In 2008, profits were realised at £888m, although in the year following the figure was £828m, a difference of 13 per cent.
