Orange Pilots Mobile Recycling for Charity
Orange has devised a scheme which includes recycling mobiles in aid of charity.
Beginning in Monmouth, Wales, the programme intends to take profits from all recycled handsets in the area and send them to worthy recipients in need of funding. As a result of the scheme, students at Trellech Primary School hope to enjoy more advanced teaching technology, while a new reception is planned for The Bridges Community Centre.
Orange cites a study which suggests citizens of the wider Monmouth region have over 30,000 defunct mobiles in their homes. For those looking to benefit local charities in exchange for their unwanted handsets, recyclers with Orange could find their mobile to be worth in excess of £280.
The choice of Monmouth was not made randomly – the community spirit and friendly feel of the store was said to compliment the scheme's focus on community benefit. The Monmouth Orange centre builds on this community image with a notice board for the area available in-store, alongside frequent workshops for customers.
The 'Orange Community' programme was the basis for this charity scheme. Operating on a national level, it encourages Orange employees to find new ways to raise money for eight different charities, including Guide Dogs for the Blind, Alzheimer's Society and the NSPCC.
With Monmouth acting as the first location for the recycling pilot, its success will determine whether or not the plan is extended to other local communities.
Monmouth store manager Lisa Perez stated: "We are excited to be launching Orange's first local charity scheme and given our store's unique focus on community, we believe that Monmouth is the perfect location for such an offering."
