Orange Gives Green Light to New Android Phone
Orange is preparing to introduce a new Android handset to its own-brand range of phones.
Codenamed 'Project Jal', Orange's latest device will be aimed at budget users. According to TechRadar the phone will be in the same end of the market as the T-Mobile Pulse Mini and the Vodafone 845. This would indicate that Orange is aiming to make the full Android experience accessible to teenagers, students and other users under the age of 25.
It has been a year since the telecoms giant released its first Android handset, the HTC Hero. Google's firmware has not been embraced on this popular network as much as others, but this could be set to change.
Expected to be a slim tablet-style device, the new phone will still pack plenty of features despite its low price tag. A respectable 3MP camera, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are among the features expected.
Running one of Android's latest firmwares, 2.1, the budget device should be able to pack a punch. Sporting all the Google services, the phone will also be able to provide a complete internet experience to budget users, and GPS and Orange Maps will come pre-installed on the handset for easy navigation.
The increased presence of Android in the Orange range is a clear indication of the influence of its new partnership with T-Mobile, Everything Everywhere. T-Mobile was one of the first networks to adopt Google's popular firmware.
With a rumoured price tag of around £100, the phone is one of the cheapest Android handsets to hit the market in recent times. The launch date for the budget Android handset is unknown, but should be no later than early 2011.
