O2 Suffer Another Mobile Data Service Problem
O2 haven’t had the best year and it seems it’s going to end on a sour note, due to the network having problems with their mobile data service.
Many O2 users have been left without their data service due to a hiccup with the system that assigns customers' IP addresses in order to get them online. This unfortunate event happened a couple of days ago and engineers have been trying to resolve the issue as fast as they can, according to mobile.broadbandgenie.co.uk.
O2’s 2009 has been a nightmare from a data-services point of view. July was when the problem first happened, when millions of users found themselves not able to access online services, such as email and web pages due to unknown problems with the network. Next was August with O2 having to apologise for a (rumoured) faulty GPRS satellite causing poor service.
This time, the issue which is causing all the problems is the software which gives out the IP addresses to users as they attempt to log on to data services. Basically, anyone who is able to maintain a connection and hold onto their IP address won’t be affected, but those in line for a new IP allocation will find themselves with nothing to show for it.
With Orange and Tesco now competing for the iPhone market share, O2’s timing could not have been worse. If O2 don’t nip the problem in the bud for good, then consumers may find themselves deciding to look somewhere else for their iPhone services.
