O2 Looking To Boost Mobile 3G Coverage
According to O2, by the end of next year, the mobile operator should have 1,500 base-station sites built or upgraded across the UK, which will boost its 3G coverage.
A statement from O2 said the investment is to “build significant headroom for mobile data”. The move will see the company spend hundreds of millions of pounds.
Not all the sites will be entirely new, with 2G sites being upgraded to 3G, according to an O2 spokeswoman. London will see 200 sites being delivered over the next year, with 40 going live before the end of Christmas this year.
The news of O2’s investment came as Orange declared that they were the best mobile broadband in the UK in terms of overall quality and value for money in a YouGov survey.
In terms of 3G coverage, O2 has the least in the UK, with 84 per cent coverage. This was was only achieved when Ofcom threatened the provider with a fine as the company was not fulfilling the coverage requirements of its 3G licence. The providers with the widest coverage are Orange and 3.
O2 chief technology officer Derek McManus talked about how much demand has increased in the company's statement: “The introduction of world-class devices, in combination with a wide variety of data applications, has brought about a dramatic change in customer behaviour and created an exponential demand on mobile data networks.”
Mr McManus said that watching a YouTube video on a smartphone can use the same amount of network capacity as sending half a million text messages simultaneously: “We are now aggressively accelerating our network growth programme to ensure we have significant headroom for the future and retain our focus on being number one for customer satisfaction.”
O2 and Vodafone have a mast-sharing agreement, which was signed in March this year, which should see their coverage being boosted.

Good job
Maybe someone from your company could talk to AT&T and get them in gear as well.

Femtocells
What we need are Femtocells for O2, same as Vodafone has.
