O2 has announced it will roll out a network of UK hot spots for free Wi-Fi.
O2 Goes For Broke With GiffGaff
A new O2 subsidiary called GiffGaff has been launched by Telefonica in the UK. The network is being touted as a people-powered mobile, it aims to provide the cheapest Pay As You Go (PAYG) network in the UK.
GiffGaff is hoping that its customers will become head crowdsourcers and that recruiting new members will help it get subsidised, or better, get some income while being able to keep operational costs low.
Though it seems novel, this approach has been done before, with 3 networks setting up a free agent section where if customers earn £5 for each SIM that is topped up by £10 or more. The GiffGaff method involves giving £5 for introducing a new member, £2 per referral and 50p per each friend introduced to the service.
Just like GiffGaff, 3 Networks features setup email and social networking tools to help with the online marketing process. However, GiffGaff will be an online only MVNO with no phone numbers and help can only be accessed by emails and a forum.
Just to show they really do aim to provide the cheapest PAYG network, calls, texts, picture messages, call forwarding and video calls to GiffGaff phones plus all 0800 numbers are free, unless they last more than 60 minutes.
Another show of faith is that calls to other networks will cost 8p per minute, compared to 25p for O2 while texts cost only 4p per message. It doesn’t stop there, with a £10 top up giving you unlimited internet browsing for six months (this is subjected to a fair usage policy.)
Other unique features are Twitter updates not costing anything and 0871 numbers only costing you 20p per minute.
