O2 Denies Rumours About Palm Pre Carrier Deal
On Saturday (23 May) an article from The Guardian reported that O2 may have finalised a deal with Palm to be the UK carrier for its highly anticipated new smartphone, the Palm® Pre™. From 6 June, the smartphone is due to be released slowly in the US with carrier Sprint according to vnunet.com.
In response to the claim a spokesman from O2 said: “We do not comment on rumour and speculation, and have made no announcement on this particular handset.”
However, perhaps the speculation will be confirmed soon as such a deal will come at a good time for O2 as Apple is expected to offer sales of its iPhone to other UK operators. This means that O2 will lose hold of its exclusivity over the popular smartphone.
The Palm Pre received valuable positive feedback at January’s Consumer Electronic Show. Unlike the iPhone it has a removable battery and it is based on Palm’s new WebOS platform, with many attractive features such as support for Wi-Fi and GPS, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, storage capacity of 8GB and a 3MP camera.
The Palm Pre is one of the latest in a range of smartphones that are enjoying enormous sales even in these times of recession.
According to mobile phone sales figures last week, for the first quarter of 2009, global sales of smartphones exceeded 36.4 million units, up by 12.7 per cent on the same period last year. Total sales of mobile phones as a whole though have suffered an 8.6 per cent drop year on year.
