O2 Add Palm Pre Rights to iPhone Legacy

O2 Add Palm Pre Rights to iPhone Legacy O2 will be announced as Palm’s exclusive UK partner for its new mobile phone, the Palm Pre, in a deal due to be confirmed next week, The Guardian has reported.

The Palm Pre mobile phone was released in the US in June and presents one of the credible rivals to Apple's iPhone dominance in the smartphone market. The latest incarnation from Apple, the iPhone 3G S sold over a million copies in its opening two weeks, Palm sales will need to be prolific. According to analysts, the Pre has sold over 300,000 units in the US, wrote The Guardian.

Palm's chairman, Jon Rubinstein spoke early in 2009 of the new mobile phone’s importance in revitalising Palm. He said: “We’ve been fighting the battle with basically both hands tied behind our back for the past year and half”.

Mr Rubinstein continued: “Now we're getting on the playing field, and we're going to be extremely competitive. But it's the beginning.”

This latest deal will enhance O2’s place as the UK’s largest mobile phone network, even further. The firm already has an exclusive agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone. Rumours began circulating about the deal between Palm and O2 in May, and the phone network had to compete with rival firm Orange in order to win exclusive rights to the new Palm Pre.

O2 also beat Orange to win the deal with Apple over selling the iPhone. The iPhone has been integral to the latest mobile phone developments and has inspired phone manufacturers to create rival mobiles. These include T-Mobile’s G1 and Nokia’s 5800, as well as the Blackberry Storm.

Palm

Two things though. I don't relish the forthcoming Orange/T-Mobile tie-up.

T-Mobile were the worst company I have ever dealt with (other than Talk Talk) and, two, Orange provide the weakest signal where I live in Herefordshire.

I can hardly receive standard 2G services, and will not be able to receive 3G. Plus, I work from home, so service is very important. The i Phone on Orange is, therefore, a complete non-starter for me.
