Nokia and IBM team up to improve business email access

Nokia and IBM team up to improve business email access Millions of Nokia phone owners will now have improved business email access thanks to a new technological collaboration between IBM and Nokia.

IBM Lotus Notes support will be provided for a number of Nokia's S60-based handsets, allowing millions of Lotus Notes users to use the email facility on their Nokia devices.

Kevin Cavanaugh, vice president of IBM Lotus Software, said: "We are literally freeing millions of people using Nokia's Symbian platform from having to rely on a desktop or laptop to access their important business communications."

IBM motivation could be explained by the fact that it predicts there will be one billion mobile web users in three years' time. The company has pointed out that there are already more mobile phones in the world than there are television sets, credit cards and personal computers.

Soren Petersen, senior vice president, Nokia, believes that there is a strong demand for people to be able to access their email, information and network during out-of-office periods and that Lotus Notes Traveler for Nokia devices is a "convenient method" of achieving this.

Mr Peterson said: "This collaboration means nearly 90 percent of business email can be mobilised with Nokia devices, without needing to purchase additional servers, middleware or licences." IBM is also keen to promote other Lotus technologies that are designed to be mobilised for 'anytime anywhere work'.

These include Lotus Sametime, which is tailored for instant messaging and unified communications, Lotus Connections, which specialises in enterprise social networking and Lotus Quickr, which makes life easier for those who enjoy social content sharing.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that Nokia is to open a new mobile phone technology research lab in Hollywood, presumably sparking a deluge of transfer requests from existing Nokia lab workers in Finland, UK, China and Switzerland.

According to FT.com, the Hollywood lab will be given the glamorous brief of developing 'mobile augmented reality' which could let mobile owners give commands to their phones through hand gestures and body movements.
