Nokia Launches Prostitutes in Spain You have to feel for phone manufacturers, launching new models every few months and having to come up with snappy but slick new names for their new blowers.

However, Nokia seems to have plumbed new depths with the ill-thought-out name of the new Nokia Lumia smartphones. It turns out the seemingly innocuous word ‘lumia’ translates as ‘prostitute’ in Spanish.

This nugget of wisdom was unearthed by MSNBC, much to the chagrin of Nokia, one would presume, given that even its Spanish customers failed to raise any objections to the name. This is mainly because the word’s gypsy roots mean it is not widely used, and therefore shouldn’t be too much of a problem for Nokia’s first WinPho handsets.

It does, however, give us a good opportunity to look at some other ridiculously-monikered phones over the years, courtesy of the chaps over at MSN, starting off with the recent HTC ChaCha, which is as ugly a word as the jiggly dance it represents.

Next up is the IBM Simon from 1992, which is perhaps aiming for the same charm the Dave TV channel has used to win many fans, but it failed quite monumentally. At $899 the Simon wasn’t as common as it sounded, but at least some braying ’90s Wall Street bankers called Simon would have got some stick from colleagues. “Hey Simon, Dave’s got your phone,” etc.

Other notable examples trawled from the archives include the Pantech Jest, which sounds like a sanitary product, and in a similar vein to the Simon, the shameless BleckBarry – a knock-off of the once-popular BlackBerry handset. The Motorola GRASP Dynamic sounds like an erotic toy, and the ZTE Vergatorio, launched in Venezuela, roughly translates to the body organ many erotic toys are modelled after.
