Nintendo and Sony Losing Mobile Gaming to iOS and Android
Traditional mobile gaming leaders Nintendo and Sony have seen revenue from software drop in the past few years, as iOS and Android games have tripled their share of the market.
Data provided by app analytics company Flurry has revealed the startling trend in the mobile gaming industry, as iOS and Android can be clearly seen to have taken some of the territory of the gaming giants. Although the weak start of the Nintendo 3DS and the steady decline of the PSP could also be factors in the market shift, the figures published speak volumes about market changes, as Flurry's report explains:
"The most striking trend is that iOS and Android games have tripled their market share from roughly 20% in 2009 to nearly 60% in just two years. Simultaneously, Nintendo, the once dominant player, has been crushed down to owning about one-third of market in 2011, from having controlled more than two-thirds in 2009."
"Combined, iOS and Android game revenue delivered $500 million, $800 million and $1.9 billion over 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively."
What is notable is the pricing structure of the games. Nintendo and Sony might charge you anywhere from $5 to $60 for a 3DS or PSP game whilst iOS and Android apps can range from nothing to little more than $15 - showing that smartphone users must be downloading a heck of a lot more software than handheld users.
With Sony offering PlayStation Suite on Android devices, giving players a taste of the console environment on their phones and tablets, lines will surely cross somewhere in the figures. Also worth mentioning is Sony's new Vita machine – the successor to the PSP – which will come in two variants; WiFi or WiFi + 3G.
The electronics giant seems to be slipping into the mobile realm at every angle, and before we know it we could have the NintendiPhone 3Droid 6GX sitting next to our holographic newspapers, so watch this space. You heard it here first, folks.

Not surprised
With mobile games getting better year after year, it's no surprise that iOS and Android games have tripled their market share from roughly 20% in 2009 to nearly 60% in just two years.
Not only have graphics drastically improved, but with faster smartphones being released every month it's starting to look more practical to download and play all kinds of games on mobile devices. Also, consider that users who play mobile games don't need to invest in a console to play these games since they are using phones that they need and already have. Furthermore, the cost of these mobile games are significantly less expensive and playable anywhere.
