New Technologies to Combat Mobile Phone Theft and Fraud

New Technologies to Combat Mobile Phone Theft and Fraud Now that mobile phone users are increasingly using their handsets for online banking and social networking purposes, the problem of fraud and stolen personal data is growing huge, rising by more than 70 per cent in 2009 year-on-year.

In response to this problem, the Home Office is making efforts to combat mobile phone threat and identity fraud with the introduction of new technologies. A new initiative is the Mobile Phone Security Challenge, supported by the Home Office Design and Technology Alliance and the Design Council.

Today three new prototypes have been unveiled as part of the initiative, according to silicon.com.

Alan Campbell, Home Office minister expressed hope that the new prototypes will reduce mobile phone fraud in the same way that Chip and Pin has dramatically cut fraud on lost and stolen credit and debit cards, to the lowest level since 1991.

One such device is called the i-migo, which is set up by connecting it to a mobile phone over a Bluetooth connection. If it finds itself separated from the handset by more than 10 metres, it then sounds an alarm and subsequently locks it. The mobile phone can only be unlocked when it is returned to the proximity of the i-migo.

Another useful feature of the i-migo is that it regularly backs up data from the mobile phone to its own storage facility.

Another product called the “tie” matches the user’s handset with the sim card and thereby prevents mobile phone identity fraud. It prevents unauthorised access to personal sensitive information that is stored on the card by using encryption.

The new anti-fraud products will be on exhibition to many industry players at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
