New Motorola Defy is Built for Life

New Motorola Defy is Built for Life Motorola has moved into new territory for a mainstream brand with its rugged new handset, the Defy.

Coming with its own new marketing buzzword, "life-proof", the Defy can withstand impact, spills and even dust. Although submersion in water isn't recommended with the new durable device, it has been reported you can take it with you into the shower, should you feel the need. Unlike the construction worker-aimed Sonim XP3, previously reported here on Epic Mobiles, the new hard knock features don't mean the Defy's aesthetics suffer.

A sophisticated black and silver colour scheme with clean-cut edges is available. The features expected from a high-end smartphone have not been sacrificed either. A 3.7 inch touchscreen is included, held in place with a sturdy rubberised plastic chassis.

A 5MP camera on the back of the handset comes with autofocus and flash. The multi-touch touchscreen is even made from "gorilla glass", to resist even the most serious of scratches.

While the virtual QWERTY keyboard has been described as being "quite fast and accurate" by Mobile Choice, the company has a new typing method on offer with its Swype system. The user can drag his or her finger from letter to letter in order to compose text - handy for those who don't like tapping a virtual keyboard.

Packing Motorola's version of Android 2.1, Motoblur, the handset has plenty of functionality and a strong focus on social networking. The user can pool all social networks in the phonebook and see updates pop up as they happen.

As a bonus, the handset even supports Adobe Flash 10.1, so YouTube and other popular embedded videos can be streamed on the sturdy device. Expect to see the handset hit the shelves, without suffering any damage, in the fourth quarter.
