Mozilla Fennec Updated for Windows Mobile 6
Mozilla released the pre-Alpha issue of Fennec several months ago and has now launched the Alpha 1 version, according to Brad’s Blog on the Mozilla website. This has been targeted at developers and other interested parties who can input into the system and suggest ways to refine it.
Fennec is the mobile phone version of the Firefox browser, developed for Windows Mobile 6. The original version was geared towards the HTC Touch Pro, and the update has also been developed with that in mind too.
The latest version features JeMalloc, which is a memory management library used by Firefox. This option has been ported to Windows CE so that Fennec can use it to manage memory more efficiently.
In addition, the company has rebuilt the Fennec’s user interface controls to be CSS-based completely. This allows easier adjustment of the company’s UI for differing screen sizes and resolutions in future. This is instrumental in showing web technology’s capacity to create more compelling UIs.
The Alpha 1 version release is said to support ‘add-ons’, which the company claims is “integral to promoting openness and innovation on the web and are unique to Fennec in the mobile space”.
Mozilla has announced that Fennec Alpha 1 is available for download, although it is intended for testing purposes only. The website has issued this invitation: “We would like to invite interested Windows Mobile developers and users to join with Mozilla’s developer and user community to help develop, test and refine the product.” It has also issued installation details of how to access the system and instructions on what to do.
